Project:
Investigating nitric oxide as the cause of iron accumulation in PD
Institution:
Mental Health Research Institute
Year Of Grant:
2012
Illness/Condition:
Parkinsons Disease,
Researcher:
Scott Ayton
Description:
To investigate if APP ablation causes age dependent SN deterioration in mice and if this can be rescued by iron chelation. To investigate if NO is the upstream molecule that causes APP depletion and iron accumulation in PD MPTP toxin model.
Publications:
The data obtained from this project was submitted in a manuscript to the journal Nature Neuroscience for review and eventual publishing.
Progress:
This project identified the key factors that caused iron to elevate in animal models of PD and consequently validated two therapeutic strategies. The data obtained was used to secure an $800000 NHMRC grant to explore further and develop new drugs.
